Filopappou Hill
To the east of the Acropolis, Filopappou Hill offers welcome
respite from the city’s busy streets, whilst its winding
pathways lead to some interesting sights, too. At the Church of
Agios Dimitrios to the south there is a collection of delightful
frescoes to view before heading on and up to the summit of the
hill, where a wonderful panorama of ancient Athens awaits at the
Monument of Filopappou (c.114 AD). To the north is the rocky
hill of the Pnyx, meeting place of the Democratic Assembly in
the 5th century BC, whilst north-west from here is the Hill of
the Nymphs, atop which stands an observatory constructed in
1842.
