Lykavittos
Hill
The name Lykavittos literally translates as ‘hill of wolves’ and
derives from an ancient time when its verdant, pine-clad slopes
reverberated with their cries. Today a concrete jungle hugs the lower
slopes whilst the imposing peak is a popular tourist destination.
There are several ways to reach the top depending on how energetic you
feel. A well-trodden footpath leads to the summit from Loukianou
Street, or the funicular railway at the corner of Aristipou and
Ploutarhou streets offers a more leisurely ascent. Sunset is a
particularly good time to visit, when the sight of the imposing
Acropolis on the facing hill is quite spectacular. To the north-east
of the summit, the open-air Lykavittos Theatre hosts jazz and rock
concerts during the summer Athens Festival. See below for contact
details.
