Syntagma - The Heart of the City

Plateia Syntagmatos (Constitution Square) is the focal point and political centre of modern Athens. Buses and metro lines converge here from all quarters of the city and so it often happens that is the first place visitors find themselves in. It’s as well to be prepared. Around the pedestrians square itself the traffic flows in seemingly endless circles, interrupted only when the lanes are closed to allow visiting dignitaries and VIP's access.

The distinctive footwear of the evzones

The imposing, ochre-colored facade of the Parliament Building commands the square's eastern side, with the Monument of the Unknown Soldier in the foreground. Extending around the Parliament Building are the National Gardens, the city's main public park and a shaded haven from the summer heat. Winding pathways lead to the elegant Zappeion congress and exhibition hall at the southern end.

Vassilissis Sofias – dubbed "Museum Mile" - begins at the north-east corner of Plateia Syntagmatos. This long, broad thoroughfare of embassies and hotels is bordered by some of the city’s most prestigious museums, including the Benaki Museum, Goulandris Museum of Cycladic Art, Byzantine Museum, the War Museum and further along, where Vasslissis Sofias runs into Vasileos Konstandinos, the National Gallery.

Important to visit

  • The spot-lit archaeological displays at Syntagma Metro which reveal the ancient subterranean stratus unearthed during construction of the station.

  • The historic Panathinaiko Stadium, the primary venue of the 1896 Olympics which looks set to pull the crowds for the archery event in 2004.
  • The peculiar attire of the euro zones who stand guard at the Monument of the Unknown Soldier; at 11am each Sunday they perform a full changing-of-the-guard ceremony.
